Teachers' Forum with Rebecca Pan and Chan Ho Fung
Poster forTeachers' forum
At our forum held at the Hong Kong Institute of Education on 14 June 2008, Ms. Rebecca Pan ¼ï}µØ and Mr. Chan Ho Fung ³¯¯E®p shared their views on pop music creation, production and performance with a lively group of Hong Kong school teachers. ¡¥Pop music is not only for leisure, it is also for learning about life and cultural appreciation¡¦, said Ms. Pan. Her own multilingual music performances around the world were also a topic for discussion. ¡¥I was performing to a world audience, and it was not an easy thing in the 60s when racial discrimination was a fact of life. I was travelling to various corners of the world, singing in English, Mandarin and Japanese. At the same time, I was also learning about different cultures.¡¦ Ms. Pan also shared the joys and challenges of staging the first Broadway-style Mandarin musical, The White Maiden ¥ÕÄ]Ä] in Hong Kong in 1972.
On a different note, Mr. Chan explained how the changing nature of the local pop music industry made it challenging to sustain a creative career in pop music. Commenting on the process of lyric writing, Mr. Chan suggested that the karaoke culture might have contributed to the current trend of increasing the number of words in songs.
The two guest speakers closed the forum with a lively discussion on the role of pop music in education. Dr. Leung, our HKIEd facilitator, commented that the inclusion of pop music in the music curriculum was a relatively recent initiative and teachers still have a lot to do to prepare for the curriculum changes. Other teachers voiced their opinion that music education has been distorted towards the commodification of examination certificates rather than the appreciation of music as an art form.
